At our recent meeting, Kristie Egge from the Wood County Health Department joined us to present an inspiring community health update. Her presentation beautifully illustrated how public health works "upstream"—preventing illness and injury before they happen, expanding access to vital medical services, and protecting the environments where we live, learn, work, and play. Because a healthier community is a shared accomplishment, this update highlighted a natural partnership, demonstrating how public health and community service lock arms to ensure everyone in our area has the opportunity to thrive.
Egge detailed how Wood County Public Health advances three key pillars that directly mirror our own Marshfield Rotary priorities. To help kids thrive, the department reduces preventable injuries by providing car seat and crib safety resources, alongside home-based parenting education and child development support. Their Healthy Smiles program further ensures youth wellness through vital dental prevention and oral health education. To care for our environment, the department safeguards local surroundings by conducting well water testing, inspecting food establishments, monitoring public pool safety, and providing hazardous waste and lead-mitigation resources. Finally, they work to ensure nutritious food for every neighbor by administering the WIC program—which delivers nutrition benefits, education, and breastfeeding support—and managing farmers' market benefits to connect families with fresh, local produce.
The true common thread weaving through all of these public health initiatives is the deliberate mission to remove barriers. Whether by making health information easy to understand, reaching families early to head off problems, or erasing the transportation and cost hurdles that block access to medical care and healthy food, the health department acts as a vital bridge between residents and the support they need. When organizations like Wood County Public Health and the Marshfield Rotary Club align their efforts, we build a stronger, more resilient community where our neighbors don't just get by, but truly flourish.
